Website Founder

This website was developed by Peter Martin Rhind. He has a PhD in ecology and taxonomy and has worked as a professional ecologist for some 25 years. In 1988 he joined the Field Studies Council in Pembrokeshire, South Wales, where he specialised in coastal pollution. In 1992 he joined the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), the statutary body for conservation in Wales, where he now specialises in coastal ecology and conservation. Since joining CCW’s Bangor Office in North Wales he has also developed a special interest in global biogeography and conservation.

Among his publications (see below) is the award winning Plant Life of Snowdonia.

But he is not the first member of his family tree to have an interest in botany. Genealogical studies by his father Keith Rhind have shown that his great, great, great, great ancestor William Rhind published a major tome entitled: A History of the Vegetable Kingdom. This first appeared in about 1841. It then went through eight later editions up to 1877 covering both living and fossil plants. Now a collector's piece, this wonderful book includes several hundred engravings illustrating features such as the vegetation of the Andes, the vegetation of Australia and the forests of Brazil and India.
